A group of kayaye girls
The dire economic situation in the country has led to an upsurge in the number of girls engaged in the Head Porter business popularly known as ‘Kayaye’.
Teenagers plying the trade are aged between 8 and 15. When GBC’s Radio Ghana caught up with a number of them in the central business district, many of them said they migrated to the South from the Northern part of the country to earn a living.
Some of them said they have been left with no choice but to be the breadwinners of their families as young as they are.
