Child protection committees urged to do more to protect children

Child Protection Committees have been urged to do more to promote the welfare and security of children, particularly girls. Mr Martin Opoku-Sekyere, Senior Labour Officer and Field Coordinator of the Defence Children International (DCI) Ghana, an NGO, said they should highlight issues affecting their development and growth.

He said they needed to help people to appreciate the need to provide children with the opportunity to receive education, quality healthcare and shelter among other things.

Mr Opoku-Sekyere said this at a day?s training workshop on child protection and gender-based violence organized in Kumasi for some community leaders by the DCI-Ghana.

The participants were made up of chiefs, queens, assembly members and the unit committees.

It was meant to sensitize them on violence against girls and women and the need to check such practices.

The workshop was part of activities lined up by the DCI-Ghana to implement the ?Girl Power Project? in Kumasi and Obuasi.

The five-year project is benefitting 20 selected communities in the two areas.

Mr Prince Ohene Koranteng, Communication Director of the DCI-Ghana, said the organization was liaising with the Departments of Social Welfare, Women and Children and the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Police Service to ensure the success of the project.
